I get this error message when I try and start the game. I’ve searched online for about an hour looking for solutions, but could not find anything that worked. Am I simply out of luck? I don’t know much about the technical side of computers so any help would be much appreciated.

nope, i have a specific test system with all runtime environments and frameworks installed and it still won’t run. don’t even suggest people waste their time installing all of that garbage.
the real problem is with the game itself. the developers are incompetent.
one of the appealing aspects of this game are the low graphical requirements, which is perfect for laptops, tablets, etc. but ironically this game won’t run on integrated graphics, which are more than capable of playing this.
it’s pretty much a huge mistake, and something very stupid to allow happen with such a game like this.

Right after its release, players have been reporting that they experienced the error message “No Suitable Graphics Card Found” whenever they tried to launch the game.

This error message is mostly associated with issues with your graphics driver and missing files in the game. This is a very common error message and forces your game not to start. Since Stardew Valley requires minimal graphics requirements, this rules out the possibility that your graphics card is underpowered.
What Causes the error message “No Suitable Graphics Card Found” in Stardew Valley?
This error messaged is caused by several different issues ranging from your graphics drivers not updating to interference from third-party applications. Here are some of the causes why you might experience this error:

I ran dxdiag to find out my graphics card info, but i’m not sure which info is useful and which isn’t.
Ok, so I believe my graphics card is an Intel(R) HD Graphics card. Does that sound right?
Yep, I figured as much :), this does seem to be happening mostly on integrated graphics adapters
Haver you tried updateing the drivers yet? I suggest this:
— download the latest graphics drivers for your laptop’s model from toshiba’s website
— close steam and anything else that might be running
— run ccleaner and clean your system, run the registry cleaner too
the whole ccleaner thing is optional but I recommend it, it’s quite probable that this will yeld no results so dont be too dishearthened if that happens, the problem might have to be fixed by the dev, could be just poor support for intel hd graphics, XNA is pretty old.
Looking at the Toshiba site for my computer currently, what sort of driver should I be looking for to update? There’s nothing that specifically says graphics.

ah that’s too bad, well I really can’t think of anythign that would help really, perhaps reainstalling directx could work if youare running like windows xp or something, but really you should go to the official forums and post in the support area there, the dev is just one guy and I’m sure it’ll be easier for him to have all the problems cocentrated in one place.

I found that Discord was causing this bug for me. I think it probably has something to do with the in-game overlay. Closing Discord I was able to start the game up just fine.
That being said I wonder if any applications overlay outside of Steam’s is the cause for other’s issues as well.

+1, the discord overlay was the cause. quick fix is to close discord, launch game, reopen discord.

after spending the last 30-45 minutes researching this, I remembered that I had recently started using a secondary monitor app for ios named ‘duet’. Even though it was not connected, running, or set to auto start, it was the root of the same issue.
That being said I wonder if any applications overlay outside of Steam’s is the cause for other’s issues as well.
Add potentially other display altering applications, running or not, to that list.
I hope this helps anyone who should be able to run the game but can’t.

I found this issue occurred only after I updated my graphics card from a 560 TI to the GTX 1080. I thought it was remnants of an old display driver (since Duet and iDisplay were both on my PC back when I had the 560 TI). Perhaps there’s something about the newer generations of NVIDIA cards that interact with Duet display?
Onarum’s suggestion of updating your drivers might actually be your best bet, which you can find on Toshiba or Intel’s site. If you’ve had your computer for a while and never updated the graphics drivers, they might be out of date.
From what I can gather, the i3-350M should be up to DX10 compatible, and I can’t imagine this game really needs to run at such a high level.
If that doesn’t work, this is kind of a blind shot, but go into your game installation directory (right-click game name > properties > local files > browse), open the _CommonRedist folder, and if you keep digging, there should be two separate programs you can run; they should have «dotNet» and «XNA» in the file names. Install those, restart your PC, and see if it helps.
If neither works, you might just have to issue a refund and appeal to the dev to improve the compatibility. Multiplayer is still in the works, so the guy is still working on improving the game.

Naturally you do some searching online, post on some forums and every one says your laptop is garbage and you need a desktop, or a better laptop with an integrated graphics card.
BULLOCKS TO THAT!
The problem is not with your laptop, but with the way the developer coded the game to check your hardware!
Ok let’s back track a little bit and look at your PC and understand something.
The image below is the results of «Can You Run It» for my 6 year old laptop, which is where I got Stardew Valley to work wonderfully.
As you can see it claims that my DEDICATED Video RAM is too low.
It thinks the laptop only has 64MB of memory for video purposes.
If this were truly the case, I would barely be able to watch videos on this machine!
This is information that it pulls from the Display Adapter Information in Windows, which comes from the onboad graphics device itself.
When you look at you Display Adapter Information page in Windows, it will show you something like this.
See where it says «Dedicated Video Memory» on here?
That’s the amount of memory of the onboard graphics controller.
This is not used to render programs or games at all!
This is more to hold information about itself and some settings. Essentially «book-keeping» memory so that it knows how to work itself.
Look a little lower, it shows «Shared System Memory».
This is the amount of memory available to the system for anything related to video!
This is a dynamic value!
Windows will automatically provide more of this pool as it is required by programs/games.
Typically the total available to share will be a bit less than half of your total RAM.
Just remember that this means the game will use some of the computer’s RAM to perform Video tasks.
Most laptops in the last 5 years will come with at least 4GB or more.
If your particular laptop has less than 4GB, this is where people would recommend you upgrade you laptop’s total RAM to 4GB, or more.
The good news is that you CAN upgrade RAM on most laptops! Woot.
It’s quite easy and there are plenty of guides on the internet for this, I will not cover that in this guide.
One might ask «But, Stardew Valley needs 256MB and this is way more. Why is it giving that error?»
Again, the dev coded the game to only look at «Dedicated Video Memory» specifically, not the Shared value which is how most laptops WITHOUT dedicated graphics will work.
If you have a laptop with a dedicated GPU (ATI/Nvidia), you wouldn’t be reading this article anyways as your game would have loaded fine since day one.
