Степень Associate Degree, срок обучения 2 года (как в очной, так и в заочной форме), присуждается студентам через два года успешного завершения учебной программы. Квалификация имеет направления:
Степень бакалавра, предполагает 4 или 5 лет обучения в колледже или университете: Bachelor of Arts / B.A. и Bachelor of Science / B.S. – бакалавры наук или искусств. В различных учебных заведениях набор предметов, входящих в список предметов, может трактоваться по разному.
Очень важно понять значение и критерии выбора предметов в системе высшего образования в США. Это придает системе очень высокую гибкость и мобильность. В первые два года обучения выбираются предметы, которые должны быть коррелированны с дальнейшей специальностью. Но если в России эта корреляция абсолютная, то в США это не так. На этом этапе важным является, как ни странно, количество часов, которые студент учиться в университете или колледже. Количество часов (обычно 40) называются кредитами.
Уровень достигнутых знаний оценивается по Grade Point Average (GPA) – средний балл успеваемости. Он влияет на выбор дальнейшего обучения на 3-4 году, где изучаются предметы, называемые Major. Выбор курсов важен еще потому, что важно, чтобы их результаты признавались (transferrable credits) другими вузами, что бывает не всегда. Надо помнить, что перевод из университета или колледжа в другое учебное заведение всегда возможен, если необходим, пока студент учится на minor, и очень затруднен при переходе на major. При переходе в другой вуз более высокого уровня имеет значение GPA.
Отметим Academic Masters (академические магистры), которые присуждаются, как правило, в области традиционных искусств, и гуманитарных дисциплин, точных наук, в том числе в таких областях, сельское хозяйство и машиностроение. Эта степень очень близка по смыслу к российской аспирантуре, и защита диссертации является неотъемлемой частью присвоения степени.
Сколько все это стоит?
Высшее образование в США относится к достаточно дорогостоящему. Наиболее экономичным вариантом является обучение в Community Colleges (местные колледжи), которые дают первую ступень высшего образования в США – Associate Degree. Стоимость курсов колеблется от 7000 до 18000 долларов в год. Проживание существенно зависит от региона, где расположено учебное заведение, Если жить в семье или снимать недорогое жилье самому, то стоимость составит от 6000 до 8000 долларов в год.
Обучение в университете стоит больше, 18000 – 45000 долларов в год и зависит от специальности, набора предметов, пользование лабораториями и т.д. Необходимо еще добавить расходы на учебники (от 1000 до 2000 долларов в год). Страховки, посещение спортивных залов, членство в студенческих ассоциациях, и т.д. требует еще 400 – 1000 долларов в год.

What Is an Undergraduate Degree?
After students finish high school, they get an undergraduate degree. An undergraduate degree refers to either a bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree. When people talk about going to college or university, they are talking about getting an undergraduate degree.
How Many Years Is an Undergraduate Degree?
Students pursue bachelor degrees for four years at a college or university. It takes two years to pursue an associate’s degree. Students may do this at a college, community college or vocational school.
What Is a Graduate Degree?
After a student gets their undergraduate degree, they have two options. They may either get a job or continue with their studies. If they choose to continue with their studies, they pursue a graduate degree.
A graduate degree is any degree that is above a bachelor’s degree. This includes a master’s degree or doctoral degree. Master’s degrees take around 2-3 years to complete. Doctoral degrees take around 5-6 years.
A graduate degree helps students dive deeper into their field. It gives students the knowledge and expertise they need to work in that field. Often times, a student must have a graduate degree to get a job. Somebody seeking a career as a clinical social worker, must have their Master’s of Social Work.
You don’t have to get a graduate degree right away after you finish your undergraduate degree. Many students take a break after their undergraduate degree and decide to work or travel instead. It’s common to see mature students in their late 20s and 30s (and even older) who decide to go back to school to get a graduate degree later in life.
What Is a Postgraduate Degree?
Students get confused with the term “postgraduate degree.” There actually isn’t a real difference between the two. Postgraduate is used interchangeably with graduate. Like a graduate degree, postgraduate refers to the range of higher degrees past the undergraduate degree. This includes both master’s degrees and Phds.
Do You Have to Do an Undergraduate to Do a Graduate Degree?
To get accepted into graduate school, you must have a bachelor’s degree. This means that you must graduate from a 4-year undergraduate college or university. A student can only pursue a graduate degree if they already have a bachelor’s degree.
Difference Between Undergraduate and Graduate and Postgraduate
Undergraduate degree programs and graduate degree programs are very different from one another. Undergraduate programs help students gain basic knowledge in a major, or even in a few majors. Students must take a variety of courses, and not only courses relating to their major. They usually spend the first few years fulfilling general course requirements.
Graduate programs are very different. You go to graduate school to learn something very specific. So, all the courses you take relate to your field of study.
Another big difference between the two is switching majors. In undergraduate programs, students aren’t always sure what they want to major in. Even if they choose a specific major, they may end up changing it. Undergraduate programs allow students to switch majors. It is also fairly easy to transfer to another school for any given reason.
Because graduate programs are so specific, it’s not easy to switch your field of study. You would have to fulfill new requirements and go through the application process all over again.
Another big difference is class size. Undergraduate classes tend to be much larger than graduate classes. In graduate programs, class sizes are much smaller.
Because of the difference in class size, teacher-student interaction also differs. In undergraduate programs, there isn’t much room to interact with your professors. There are also fewer opportunities to participate in class.
Graduate programs are more intimate and thus, more dynamic. Students have more opportunities to participate in class discussions. They also have more opportunities to work with their professors.
To get accepted into an undergraduate program, students must take the SAT or ACT. Other requirements include a minimum GPA, letters of recommendation and personal statements. Colleges and universities all have their own requirements.
Many graduate programs require students to take the GRE. They also require undergraduate transcripts, letters of recommendation, and personal statements.

Bachelor’s degrees
Это первая ступень высшего образования в странах с Болонской системой. Когда говорят о высшем образовании, чаще всего подразумевают именно бакалавриат. Магистратуру и докторантуру обычно называют уже послевузовским или постдипломным (postgraduate) образованием.
В отличие от России, где длительность обучения зафиксирована образовательными стандартами, за рубежом она зависит от количества учебных часов. Их считают в образовательных кредитах (ECTS): один кредит равен 25 — 30 учебным часам в зависимости от страны. Чтобы получить диплом бакалавра, вы должны набрать 180–240 ECTS за все время учебы. Бакалавриат займет у вас 3–4 года, если не считать медицинские и юридические специальности: на них учеба длится от пяти до шести лет.
Все бакалаврские программы тоже делятся на несколько видов. На сайтах зарубежных вузов вы можете увидеть обозначения BA, BSc, BFA и другие. Основных типов четыре:
1. Bachelor of Arts (ВA) — бакалавр искусств. Программы в сфере гуманитарных и общественных наук. Чаще всего они делают акцент на теорию. Например, история моды и дизайна, филология, политология.
2. Bachelor of Science (ВSc) — бакалавр наук. Обучающие курсы в естественнонаучных областях, информатике и математике. Еще ВSc можно встретить в социальных науках и психологии. Здесь упор делается на практические исследования. Например, будущим психологам придется разбираться в основах биологии, химии и даже информатики.
3. Bachelor of engineering (BEng) — бакалавр технических наук. Объединяет все технические специальности — электротехника, конструирование, строительство, программирование.
4. Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) — бакалавр изящных искусств. BFA выдается в области визуальных и исполнительских искусств. Это все, что относится к моде, дизайну, театру, кино и фотографии.
Master’s degrees
Магистерские программы — это форма поствузовского образования, а не «досиживание до полноценного диплома», как в России. За границей на них поступают те, кто планирует связать свою жизнь с научной или преподавательской деятельностью. Сроки обучения отличаются. В Великобритании — один год. В США — от полутора до четырех лет, в зависимости от университета и специальности. Вот какие программы (и одноименные степени) популярнее всего:
1. Master of Arts (MA) — магистр искусств. Эту академическую степень можно получить на факультетах лингвистики, антропологии, философии, литературы, дизайна, политологии, социологии, психологии, теологии и так далее.

Предпринимателям вкладывать деньги в MBA почти бессмысленно. Там не объяснят, как найти новые ниши и выжить в кризис, особенно в условиях российского рынка. Лучше всего такие курсы подходят сотрудникам транснациональных корпораций, потому что дают понимание стандартов и методов их работы, позволяют стать своим.
Doctoral degrees
Докторантура — это высшая академическая степень. Совсем не то же самое, что степень доктора наук в России. Если вы поступаете в докторантуру за рубежом, ваша главная задача — написать и защитить диссертацию (в большинстве стран она называется doctoral thesis). Это самостоятельная исследовательская работа, которой соискатель занимается три года.
Здесь нет учебы в общепринятом смысле. Просто вуз разрешает пользоваться своими лабораториями, библиотекой и дает в помощь научного руководителя. Одновременно с учебой в докторантуре часто приходится преподавать или ассистировать в том же вузе. Это в первую очередь касается тех, кто претендует на стипендию — студент получает так называемый assistantship, то есть зарплату за преподавание или помощь на кафедре. Ее размер покрывает расходы на обучение.
Чаще всего встречается наименование Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Но это не значит, что вам обязательно заниматься исследованиями трудов Аристотеля и Канта. Здесь слово «философия» используется как альтернатива «науке».
Докторантура обычно дороже магистратуры и бакалавриата. Разница может составлять от сотни евро (например, во Франции или Германии) до нескольких тысяч долларов (в Австралии и США). Точная стоимость зависит от страны обучения и типа университета, поэтому даже примерные цифры привести здесь сложно. Они варьируются от 400 евро до 40 тысяч долларов.
