Learn how to use source patching and track targeting to take your editing skills to the next level.
Source patching improves versatility and allows you to make precise edits to your clips. The source material is available in the project panel. You can move it to the timeline by dragging it, or using keyboard shortcuts.

Adobe® Premiere® Pro lets you use source patcher presets to control insert and overwrite operations on your clips. This feature simplifies the edit workflow, without taking away your ability to overwrite an empty gap.
Source patching affects where and on which track a clip is placed in the timeline from the Source Panel.
Using source patchers and source track indicators
Source patchers have three states: On , Off , Black/Silent . One patch is displayed for each video and audio track for the item in the Source monitor:
Single-click a source indicator to toggle between the On and Off states. Press the Alt key to toggle to the Black/Silent state. Press Alt + Shift to apply the operation to all source indicators of the same media type.
You can drag an assigned source track indicator and assign it to another track:
You can drag source indicators of the same type (audio or video) simultaneously while maintaining the relative vertical spacing between the two. Press Shift while you click and then drag an assigned source track indicator:
When there aren’t enough tracks to display the source tracks, the last clip track contains a + icon in the source indicator column. If you click the icon, new tracks are added to match the source.

Track Targeting controls several things, including Copy/Paste, Match Frame, and Navigation commands. When you copy and paste an asset on the Timeline, the asset is pasted on the lowest track targeted based on the layer order. For example, if you have video tracks one and four targeted, your content will paste to track one.
For the Match Frame command (keyboard shortcut F), Premiere Pro matches the frame of the clip on the highest track targeted. For example, if you have clips on video tracks one, two, and four, and only track two is targeted, Premiere Pro will Match Frame the clip on track two. You can also use the navigation shortcut keys with targeted tasks.

Use the target tracker in Spark AR Studio to trigger an effect when the camera is pointed at an image in the real world, like a poster for a movie.
Build a world effect triggered using a target by following this tutorial.
Adding target tracking
Start by adding a target tracker:
It’ll be listed in the Scene panel. You’ll also see a square in the middle of the Viewport and Simulator. This square represents the space for the target image:
Add the target image
This is a texture representing the real life image that will trigger the effect. It’s a good idea to take a look these best practices to help choose an image that will work well.
To add the target image:
You’ll see the texture appear in the Viewport.
Adding the effect that will be triggered by the target
To add the effect you want to trigger when the camera is pointed at the target, add the objects you want to appear as a child of the target tracker.
Fixed or moving targets
Target tracking effects can either stay in the place where the camera first detected the target image, or move with the target image as it changes position.
Fixed targets
The effect will appear at the point where the target image was first detected by the camera. If the target leaves the camera’s view, the effect will still be displayed and tracked correctly. The target must stay in a fixed position to get the best results. If the target is moved or removed, tracking may be disrupted.
To further improve tracking when your target is not in view of the camera, you should encourage users to move their camera around the target for a short period of time before the target goes out of camera view.
Moving targets
The effect will move with the target image if the target image changes position. If the camera isn’t pointing at the target, the effect will disappear.
Previously, fixed and moving target trackers were two separate object types. The new target tracker performs measurably better than the older versions, so it’s recommended that you update your existing tracking effects. To update effects created with previous versions of the target tracker, open your project file in the latest version of Spark AR Studio and re-publish your effect.
Properties
When the target tracker is selected in the Scene panel you can view and edit its properties in the Inspector.
Set which layer the target tracker is assigned to.
When this box is checked, the target tracker is visible in the effect.
Add the texture that will trigger the effect.
Change the position, scale or rotation of the target.
Set whether the target tracker works through the front or back camera, before the effect is captured or during capture.
Create simple patch graphs to represent the target tracker.

To create a patch representing the target tracker to use in the Patch Editor, drag the target tracker from the Scene panel into the Patch Editor.

Understand Source Patching and Track Targeting in Adobe Premiere Pro
When editing video in Premiere Pro, many people confuse Source Patching with Track Targeting. While both are located in the same location of the Timeline and look very similar, the two are, in fact, quite different. Each performs its own distinct function, and trying to understand what exactly that is can prove to be daunting for new users of Premiere. Even after playing around with the program for several years, I still didn’t fully understand the ins and out of these two important features of the Timeline panel. Let’s have a closer look and learn the specific differences between Source Patching and Track Targeting.
Source Patching
As the name implies, Source Patching instructs Premiere where to «patch» your source. They control the track location of Insert and Overwrite edits on the Timeline. There is one Source Patch button for the video track and one for the audio track. The buttons become active only when you have a source selected. This can be a clip selected in the project panel or a clip loaded in the Source Monitor. Source buttons are located just to the left of the Track Targeting buttons in the Timeline panel. This is most likely where all of the confusion ensues, since both buttons look very similar, with the ability to turn on and off with a click. However, the Source Patch indicators have three different modes; on, off, and silent.
Track Targeting
Track Targeting controls several things, including Copy/Paste, Match Frame, and Navigation commands. When you copy an asset on the Timeline and then decide to paste, your content will paste on the lowest track targeted based on layer order. For example, if you have video tracks two and four targeted, your content will paste to track two. For the Match Frame command (keyboard shortcut F), Premiere will match the frame of the clip on the highest track targeted. Again, this is based on layer order. So if you have clips on video tracks one, two, and four, and only track two is targeted, Premiere will Match Frame the clip on track two. Last but not least, you can use navigation shortcut keys with targeted tracks. The Up and Down arrow keys will quickly jump your playhead to head and tail edits of clips in targeted tracks.

The Adobe Premiere Pro timeline can be a confusing area, even for seasoned editors. With source patching, track targeting, sync and track lock, you can quickly become confused with how to navigate and properly use all of the tools within Premiere’s timeline panel. Let’s focus in on the power of track targeting.
What’s a Track and How Do You Target It?
Premiere’s timeline consists of both video and audio tracks. Video tracks are represented with a V and can be found above the audio tracks, which are denoted with an A. You’ll notice that every track in the timeline has a number. You can add, delete, and rename tracks as needed. To target a track, simply click on its number. Targeted tracks are highlighted with a blue color. You can target multiple tracks at a time.
Three Benefits of Track Targeting
1. Navigation
Learning the ins and out of track targeting will help you to become a significantly faster editor, since targeting helps you navigate quickly through the timeline panel.
Use the up and down arrow keys to immediately snap your playhead to in and out points of clips on targeted tracks. Again, you can have multiple tracks targeted at any given time, which will allow you to navigate the in and out points of any clip on the timeline. Target a track in your timeline and hit the up and down keys to give it a try. You’ll quickly realize how useful this feature is.
2. Copy/Paste
Track targeting also gives you additional control over clips on the timeline when using copy/paste. When you copy and paste clips within your timeline, Premiere will always paste the clips to the lowest numerical track targeted. If you have no track targeted, the clip will paste to track 1.
3. Match Frame
Track targeting also correlates with match frames. Match framing allows you to find the source frame of any frame in a sequence clip on the timeline, and brings it up in the source monitor. Premiere Pro will only match frame a clip when a track is targeted, and will always match the frame in the highest targeted track.
As you can see, learning the ins and outs of track targeting will significantly speed up your post production workflow.
