Since TouchShutter is an app, not a normal camera feature, it needs to be launched before you can use it. The problem with this is that all image settings and other camera settings are reset as soon as you do it. For example, our Sony Alpha 7 II has the focus magnifier set as the center, or OK, button. Enter the Touchless Shutter app, and suddenly this button is disabled and the focus magnifier has to be selected through the menu.

All in all, we like the idea, and we think that this method of releasing the shutter should just be offered as an additional drive mode or custom option in future a7 models, or in future a7 firmware updates. That’s assuming of course that Sony isn’t intending to charge for the final (non-beta) version.

Sony Introduces New ‘Touchless’ Shutter Release App

If you want to be serious about shooting long exposures, you are going to need to find a way of triggering your camera without bumping or moving your camera at all. Most people use some type of cable trigger or, if their camera supports it, their phone. But Sony has just introduced a new app for their cameras that wins the ‘Coolest Shutter Release’ award.

The new app, called ‘Touchless Shutter‘ allows camera users to trigger their shutter via the eye sensor on their Sony mirrorless camera. On some cameras, like the A7 II, you can even do a bulb mode shot in this app (basically the shutter would stay open as long as your hand is in front of the eye sensor).

While I am sure that it has its quirks, this could be an infinitely more convenient way for people shooting landscapes or the night sky to get their shots without having to lug around cables and other easy to lose accessory triggers. For backpackers, with whom mirrorless cameras are already a huge draw, this could be a selling point because it means less gear they have to carry.

Sony releases the Touchless Shutter APP.

Sony announced the new Touchless Shutter APP (donwload at Playmermories). Sony says:

With this application, you can simply hold your hand over the eye sensor to release the shutter.
Now you can operate the shutter without touching the camera, thus eliminating camera shake once and for all. When bulb-shooting, hold your hand over the eye sensor twice to start and end the exposure.
